Reductions on duties for 90% of all Imported Goods

Problem:

A company was looking to save money on importing their purchased components into the UK. Various manufacturers worldwide sent products to them in the UK, enabling them to manufacture the final assembly.

Solution:

The commodity codes used were analysed and methods of reducing the duty rate currently being paid were discovered. The buyers for the company shared the documentation they had received from the supplier, regarding how their products would be assessed. Knowing that the first 4 digits worldwide are the same for the item gave an insight into where to begin for the UK classification. After reading and assessing the product, the correct tariff code was found and used, which achieved a reduction in duty costs.

Results:

After reclassifying all their goods, the company had reductions in duty costs in over 90% of goods imported. In some cases, after reclassifying them, the duty rate fell from 7% duty rate to zero rated.
